Whitby hat-trick as Saints hammer Catalans
Saints delivered a sensational display of attacking rugby league to put Catalans Dragons to the sword 42-12 in an intense Super League contest. Star of the show was winger Tom Whitby, who bagged a stunning hat-trick of tries to secure a comprehensive victory for his team.
The match started with both teams showing intent and passion, but it was the Saints who drew first blood with a try from fullback Jack Johnson. Catalans hit back with a try of their own, but the home side responded in style with a series of scintillating plays that left the visitors stunned.
Whitby’s first try came from a pinpoint kick from halfback Sam Davies, who put the ball on a plate for the winger to slide over in the corner. His second try was a solo effort, as he showed incredible footwork and speed to evade the Dragons defenders and touch down under the posts.
With the scoreline reading 30-6 in favor of Saints going into the final quarter, Whitby completed his hat-trick with a blistering run down the touchline, leaving the Catalans defenders trailing in his wake. It was a fitting end to a dominant display by the home side.
Head coach John Smith praised Whitby’s performance, saying: “Tom was outstanding today. His finishing was clinical, and he showed real determination to get over the line. It was a joy to watch him in full flow.”
The win sees Saints climb to the top of the Super League table, while Catalans will be left licking their wounds after a tough defeat. The Whitby hat-trick will go down in Saints folklore as one of the great individual performances in recent memory.
